This configuration keeps the handwheel firmly fixed to the valve cover, making it impossible to open the valve unless the joint is intentionally loosened. During maintenance or operation, the joint can simply be released to allow the valve to open or close.

Valve locks are most commonly used on normally open or normally closed valves, as well as on valves that require adjustment during maintenance. A single device can secure two valves at once, reducing the risk of accidents caused by malfunction or misoperation.
